A traveling magazine salesman was charged Friday with
attempted capital murder and aggravated sexual assault in an attack on a
20-year-old
Police Sgt. Rick Coy said William Mark LaFranchi, 24, a magazine firm salesman with no known address, was charged with rape and attempted murder.
Municipal Judge Cleve Moten set bail at $100,000 on each charge.
The woman told police she admitted a magazine salesman to
her
“He was really, truly selling magazines at first.” The woman’s husband said Friday. “She refused to buy any. He walked to the door. When he shook her hand, that’s when he grabbed her.”
The man threatened to harm her baby, raped her, and tried to suffocate her before slitting her throat with a butcher knife, Coy said.”
“He sexually assaulted her, then took her to another room where he choked her and placed a pillow over her face until she was unconscious,” Coy said. “Then he went and got a butcher knife and began slicing her throat with the knife. She was left on the bed unconscious, with her throat cut. The doctor who examined her said he missed her carotid artery by a hair.
The woman regained consciousness after about 30 minutes and called her husband at work.
“She had this rag over her throat,” her husband said. “When she took the rag away, there was this big old chunk missing.” He called police and an ambulance.

Coy said he began searching the woman’s neighborhood for clues. I went out all day yesterday, from apartment to apartment, looking for magazine salesman,” he said Friday.
“I found one – he wasn’t the suspect – but he told me that a salesman had been there the day before and who he was.”

Coy said LaFranchi matched the description the woman gave police of the rapist. She later identified him.
LAFRANCHI HAS no known permanent address and has traveled throughout the country for an unknown time selling magazines, Coy said. A criminal history was not complete, he said.

Coy said LaFranchi told him he had been inside several other woman’s apartments Wednesday trying to sell magazines before he knocked on the victim’s door. “I’m hoping they will see this or read this and contact us,” Coy said.
The woman’s husband, who said he was surprised his wife let a stranger into the apartment, advised people to be cautious.
“I want these people out there to be extra careful about who they talk to and who they let in,” he said. “He just talked his way in.”

A door-to-door magazine salesman who raped and cut the throat of a prospective customer pleaded guilty Friday to charges of attempted capital murder and sexual assault
in exchange for two 50-year prison terms. William Mark LaFranchi, 20, will be allowed to serve the two 50-year sentences concurrently.
His 20-year-old victim and her husband and mother attended the brief session with state District Judge Mace Thurman.

After failing to sell subscriptions, LaFranchi started to leave, then grabbed the woman, police said. He threatened to harm her baby, then raped her and tried to suffocate her with a pillow.
In the confusion LaFranchi said he decided to get a butcher knife from the kitchen of the victim when she did not stop breathing, said Caria Garcia, assistant district attorney.
He cut her throat and left her on the bed. She regained consciousness about 30 minutes later and called her husband. About 200 stitches were required to close the wound, her husband said.
LaFranchi was arrested the next day after a resident reported a prowler at his home.
